Prescriptives Custom Blend Foundation: Your Beauty Review

Finding the perfect foundation can sometimes feel next to impossible. There are so many factors to consider: your skin tone, your skin undertones, your skin type, the season, how much you tan or burn, how much coverage you need, what texture you prefer…the list goes on. I find it incredibly frustrating, and I have it fairly easy: although I have some acne and redness, I can usually count on the second or third palest foundation in any given collection matching my skin tone pretty well, even if it doesn’t have the coverage or texture I’m looking for.

Needless to say, I was excited to get the chance to try out Prescriptives Custom Blend Foundation. It’s both a beauty service and a beauty product: you make a video chat appointment with a Prescriptives PX Beauty Genius to talk about your skin and your foundation needs and come up with the perfect custom foundation. The service is especially recommended for people with very pale or very dark skin, or if those who have trouble finding a foundation they love.

Unfortunately, the video chat feature was down when I tried out the service, but I was still able to talk with my PX Beauty Genius, Bobby, via text-based chat and email. I sent a #nomakeupselfie (far from #flawless) and talked about my skin’s weird quirks and my dream foundation goals. I was pleasantly surprised by how much customization is offered: along with the color and level of coverage, you can customize the finish and add ingredients for oil control, hydrating, firming and evening. When I wasn’t sure what I was looking for regarding some aspects of the foundation – like hydration – Bobby was happy to give an opinion and expert advice.

When I got my foundation in the mail a few days later, I found it matched my skin tone better than any I’ve tried and stayed on longer than I expected. I even got complimented on my skin – a rare occurrence for me! Some might hesitate to try the service because of the time commitment and price ($55-75), but if you don’t have a foundation you’re happy with, the level of care Prescriptives puts into developing your custom foundation can definitely pay off. If you’re not happy with the finished product, you can send it back for adjustments as often as it takes – though I’m told that that rarely happens, and I believe it!

Lady Gaga, Chrissy Teigen And Bella Hadid Sport Sheet Masks For Selfies

Behind-the-scenes beauty is no longer behind the scenes! The latest celebrity social media trend is sheet mask selfies. Whether scary, silly or outrageously glamorous, more and more celebrities are sharing this part of their beauty routines online.

Alexa Chung

(Photo : Instagram/Alexa Chung)

Sheet masks – and sheet mask selfies – have been gaining buzz over the past year or two, but they’ve finally become as ubiquitous as a duck face selfie to show off a new lip color or a salon selfie revealing a new hairstyle. In the past week, Kelly Osbourne, Alexa Chung and Lady Gaga have all shared sheet mask selfies. All three stars went for silly over glamorous, with Alexa even making a “Silence Of The Lambs” joke: “Put the lotion in the basket.”

Lady Gaga

Sheet mask selfies don’t have to be silly or scary: As you might expect, supermodels Karolina Kurkova and Karlie Kloss made sheet masks look positively luxurious with pre-Met Gala selfies earlier this month.

In March, Bella Hadid combined both sides of the selfie trend with a silly over-the-top pose captioned, “I’m such a diva today.”

Early adopters of the sheet mask selfie trend include Chrissy Teigen (May 2012), Rita Ora (April 2013), and, funnily enough, Chris Pratt (July 2014). However, for a long time, sheet masks and sheet mask selfies were available only to celebrities and jet setters; in her May 2012 selfie, Chrissy Teigen jokes about finally finding sheet masks duty free.

In the past year, Korean sheet masks and those inspired by them have become more widely available in the US and are now easy to find at every price point. Shop some of our favorites below – and don’t forget to snap a selfie.

Last Minute Mother's Day Gift Guide: Top 7 Go-To Spa And Beauty Products She Will Love

Get the Most Popular Beauty World News Stories in a Weekly Newsletter

Mother's Day

(Photo : Beauty World News)

With Mother’s Day rapidly approaching this Sunday, it can be all too easy to balk and stick to the flowers and chocolates routine. It’s the thought that always counts, so why not treat mom to something that will last a little longer than chocolates or flowers? Mother’s Day should be about making time for her, or rather, giving her the opportunity to make the time for herself. So this year, we’ve done the leg work for you and scouted the best bath and beauty products that will be worth her while — from Tatcha’s camellia cleansing oil to a gardenia-scented diffuser from Illume, we’ve provided the makings for the ultimate, indulgent goodie basket.

Shiseido's Eudermine

1.     Shiseido’s Eudermine Revitalizing Essence

The Shiseido brand is one that is highly revered, specializing in unique skin care products. Their Eudermine Revitalizing Essence is one of their oldest products, first introduced in 1897. This lotion restores skin’s moisturizing levels and even responds to climate change and time of year, so it’s the perfect essential to use year-round for all skin types. It’s ideal to use daily and for those with sensitive skin.

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment

2.  Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment with SPF 15

An oldie but a goodie, Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment is one of the best lip balms on the market. And dare we even say that it’s tastier on the lips than a Hershey’s bar. It’s free of petroleum, lanolin and mineral oil so it doesn’t make lips feel sticky or goopy. It contains SPF 15 (because mom always said to wear sunscreen), has a wonderful citrus scent and instantly revives dry and chapped lips. The Sugar Lip Treatment comes in a variety of styles and color tints for those who want a little color along with restorative lip moisture.

First Aid Beauty

3.  First Aid Beauty’s Vitamin Hydrating Mist

Faces need their vitamins too and First Aid Beauty’s Vitamin Hydrating Mist is the perfect solution. It’s vitamin-rich formula not only refreshes, awakens and hydrates skin in a light mist, it also actively protects against environmental aggressors. It’s ideal to use in the sun or in dry wind as well as during travel. A Plus: it’s said to double as a makeup setter also.

Illume

(Photo : Illumecandles.com)

4. Illume’s Gardenia Essential Diffuser

Diffusers are a great, subtle alternative to regular air fresheners and their aesthetically pleasing packaging doesn’t hurt either. Illume features a diffuser in a wonderful gardenia scent. This light floral scent is perfect for any room and is alcohol free. Illume’s Gardenia Essential Diffuser serves as a longer-lasting alternative to a bouquet of flowers.

Tatcha Cleansing Oil

(Photo : Tatcha)

5. Tatcha’s Pure Step Camellia Cleansing Oil

Camellia oil was originally used by geishas in Japan to remove their layers of makeup. Asian skincare and makeup line, Tatcha, has revamped this makeup remover to create a light-weight formula for all skin types. The Camellia cleansing oil is packed with botanical oils, oleic and linoleic acids and vitamins A, B and E. This cleanser won’t strip skin and can even remove waterproof makeup and sunscreen.

Philosophy's Fresh Start Cleansing Duo

6. Philosophy’s Fresh Start Cleansing Duo

Where bath products, soaps and cleansers are concerned, the Philosophy brand remains king (or queen). Their Fresh Start Cleansing Duo should be vital to any power cleansing regime. It’s tried but true formula works to balance skin and replenishes with topical antioxidants. It’s multipurpose, so it’s not an involved process; it’s a three-step, cleanser, toner and makeup remover. Time savers are the best!

Elizabeth & James

7. Elizabeth And James’s Nirvana Mini Set

There’s no better way to round out a bath and spa day like spritzing on a little perfume (bonus points if you’re rocking a freshly-warmed bathrobe). Our current favorite is the Elizabeth & James duo pack of their Nirvana perfumes (Nirvana White and Nirvana Black, respectively). The combo of mini roll-on perfumes is the perfect gift set. White boasts a bouquet of peony, chic muguet and musk while Black is a scent blend of sandalwood, violet and vanilla. Although these scents are distinct, their notes are subtle and translate well on skin, making it the perfect go-to gift set. Creators Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen probably gave a set to their own mother and if there’s one thing the Olsen twins are, they’re trendsetters.

Check out your local Sephora or shop online for great deals on these items. Happy Mother’s Day!

We Interviewed The CEO of Anisa International To Discuss The Keeping And Care Of Makeup Brushes

Get the Most Popular Beauty World News Stories in a Weekly Newsletter

Makeup Brushes

(Photo : Getty)

The side effects of not cleaning your makeup brushes regularly can harm your skin, yet 39% of women who use makeup brushes do not clean them even once a month!

So why are women avoiding the makeup brush cleanse? We sat down with Anisa Telwar-Kaicker, founder and CEO of Anisa International, to find out why it’s so important to clean these essential beauty tools.

Is it really that important to clean your makeup brushes? Why?

Our skin is a vital part of our overall well being so it’s important to keep it healthy. Many women don’t realize the correlation between healthy skin and cleaning makeup brushes. In addition to overall hygiene and skincare, regular cleaning protects your beauty tool investment and maximizes the effectiveness of your makeup products.

What are the dangers in not cleaning your makeup brushes?

Over time makeup product residue and dead skin can collect on brushes to create a breeding ground for bacteria. Additionally, dirty brush fibers can’t pick up makeup properly and can affect the application of your product. A dirty brush can trigger blemishes and impact your ability to create a certain makeup look.

Makeup Brushes

(Photo : Getty)

Is there really a difference between drugstore brushes and designer brushes?

Quality and longevity can vary at different price points. Less expensive brushes often do not regain the same shape after cleaning. The hair quality and design of a brush often lasts much longer at higher price points.

How much should we invest in makeup brushes?

According to our recent survey, 60% of women who have purchased a makeup brush have spent $10 or more on a single brush, while a quarter have spent $20 or more. Many of us spend a lot on our makeup products, but the product performance can be significantly impacted by the tool you use for application. You should invest in a brush just as you would in your makeup.

More tips on how to properly clean your brushes properly tomorrow!

Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima has an exciting new gig: she’s the face of Marc Jacobs’ new fragrance, “Decadence.”

According to WWD, the new fragrance, due out this fall, is an antithesis to the brand’s Daisy scent and is “intended to be over-the-top – complete with a sensuous shot of Lima in a boudoir setting with rich greens and golds.”

“It’s about a good girl planning to be decadent,” Lori Singer, group vice president of global marketing at Coty Inc., told WWD. “It’s very high quality, opulent, very elegant and sophisticated. Daisy is more casual and whimsical and naïve. This fragrance will elevate the elegance of the entire house of Marc Jacobs fragrances.”

Caravan Stylist Studio Gives Us Quick Tips And Tricks To Revamp Our Beauty Routine

Caravan

(Photo : Caravan Stylist Studio)

However small or large, we all have goals to which we aspire.

I had found that my goals were becoming more beauty-centric. Now, before you write me off as vapid and narcissistic, let me clarify: I am in the midst of pushing myself out of a hair and beauty slump. And it is indeed a slump.

My makeup routine had dwindled to moisturizer, powder, blush and sometimes mascara if I was feeling extra decadent. As for my pin-straight mane, it had grown surprisingly long, the lack of a good layered cut weighing it down in all of its can’t-hold-a-curl straightness. If I was feeling at a true loss, I would tie my locks up in a high ponytail (if I ever fooled you into thinking that I was going to the gym with said pony tail, then it’s working).

Needless to say, I required a couple of quick makeup tricks and a blowout which could magically last me the rest of the year. My beauty routine needed the love and care of a celebrity glam squad—they’re fast and efficient, not to mention a walking encyclopedia of which products actually work.

So when I was afforded the unique opportunity to stop by Caravan Stylist Studio, I took it as a sign from the beauty gods (Aphrodite? Cleopatra? Marilyn? Thanks, ladies).

Caravan Stylist Studio is a wardrobe and full-service beauty studio which aims to partner A-list media influencers, bloggers, editors, fashion designers and beauty experts under one stylish roof. Located at the Carlton Hotel, and founded and run by Claudine DeSola, Caravan is a whirling dervish of collaboration that partners top-notch designers and beauty brands to create a full service experience for A-list clients, with their mantra being “talent helping talent.”

Caravan

Their full-time beauty expert and celebrity hair/makeup/nail artist, Valerie Star, is a one-woman glam squad who champions one red carpet event after another. It also turns out that Valerie, who can wield a nail polish brush, curling iron and mascara wand like no one else, is a fountain of information when it comes to using the products that won’t waste your time. She tests the products herself before using on clients.

Caravan Studio

(Photo : Beauty World News)

Upon entering the studio, I was whisked into a chair opposite Valerie where I was told to pick a color. I chose the metallic “Cash Only” from New York-based nail polish company Color Club’s new “Oil Slick” line. My nails had been begging for a fresh buffing and coat since I had only recently barely recovered from a round of gel nail polish.

Caravan Studio

(Photo : Beauty World News)

The polish dried almost instantly, which was perfect because then it was time for a little hair and makeup. This meant scrubbing off the vestiges of my tinted moisturizer and mascara from the day.

Valerie handed me the Foreo luna mini: a palm-sized, electronic face cleanser that not only promises a deep exfoliation, but also removes dead skin cells and gently opens pores to enhance the full effects of your skincare products. The battery can last for up to 450 full-wash routines (sold).

As someone who tends to get redness around the nose and cheeks when I exfoliate, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Foreo device had actually left my complexion and skin tone looking even and balanced. I almost wanted to forgo makeup, but you know, duty calls.

Next was hair. When Valerie asked me how I wanted my hair, I had my answer ready: “Volume, big.”

Caravan Studio

(Photo : Beauty World News)

The Not Your Mother’s products made a big play here (pun so intended), as Valerie used their Whip It Up Cream Styling Mousse to thicken my strands and build body. Then she used a little of the brand’s Short Order Fiber Glaze Cream and their Double Take Dry Finish Spray for hold and began curling my hair.

Beginning first with the bottom layers and slowly working her way up the top my head, she used the Not Your Mother’s 2-in-1 Beach Babe Curling Iron, using the wand with the beaded shape to form loose yet strong and defined curls. Curls that actually stayed!

Caravan Studio

(Photo : Beauty World News)
Awaiting my transformation.

After a quick misting of She’s A Tease Hairspray, we finished up with some makeup.

I’ve always had a penchant for a good cat eye, yet my unsteady hands have made the task a futile one.

So I asked Valerie how to achieve the winged eyeliner with perfect symmetry. She advocated using a gel liner and a very fine, small angled brush to gently brush the liner upwards, adding tiny liner dots beforehand to guide the stroke of the brush.

To finish it all off, she used Physician’s Formula mascara. The mascara was their Lash Extension Kit which uses two bottles: the first, a base mascara, and then a second bottle which holds tiny black fibers that cling to lashes to build fullness and length without the sticky clumping. The kit even promises thicker and longer lashes after 3 weeks.

My eyelashes looked unreal but decidedly not fake, something all mascaras promise but fall just short of achieving.

After a quick swipe of pink gloss, my transformation was complete and was everything I had been hoping for: bouncing, full and wind-swept looking hair with defined curls that loosened throughout the day but remained intact to accompany a subtle and refined cat eye complete with bold, modish lashes.

Most importantly, though, I left with a head crammed full of ideas and quick tricks to incorporate into my own beauty routine, maybe just waiting to be used for an impromptu red carpet event. But most likely, an impromptu run to the grocery store.

Like I said, goals to which I aspire.

4 Simple Tips To Try Now To Prevent Crow's Feet For Younger Looking Eyes

Get the Most Popular Beauty World News Stories in a Weekly Newsletter

Kim Kardashian

Top tips for preventing crow’s feet(Photo : Frederick M. Brown Getty Images Entertainment)

Your eyes are the windows to your age. Studies have shown that when strangers are asked to judge how old a person is, the eye area is one of the biggest influences. Why? The delicate skin around our eyes is usually the first place to get noticeable fine lines/wrinkles and even brown discoloration.

Exposure to sun and pollution, stress and late nights are the usual culprits for aging skin around the eyes. Thankfully, there are things we can do to keep this delicate area looking youthful. Here are some tips from Houston Oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Mirwat Sami on how to combat premature aging around the eyes and how to keep crow’s feet at bay.

Strawberries

(Photo : Getty)

Healthy Eye Foods. Healthy foods high in Vitamin C like strawberries, oranges and leafy greens protect against wrinkles and dry skin. Green tea and berries contain antioxidants to fight inflammation and protect against pollutants. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, flax seeds and walnuts help both your skin and eyes by regulating the fluid in your body.

Eye Cream. Using a moisturizing eye cream is essential to staying clear of wrinkles and crow’s feet. Dry skin can lead to cracks, wrinkles and bags. Dr. Sami advises to, “Choose an eye cream with SPF to keep the delicate skin surrounding the eye in tip-top shape all year round. In addition, retinol helps to combat wrinkles and keep crow’s feet at bay by boosting collagen.” However, Dr. Sami advises to use an eye cream containing retinol at night, as UV exposure during the day can break down this potent ingredient.

Salt

(Photo : Getty)

Eating too much salt. Say no to salt! Under eye bags are intensified when you have a diet that is high in sodium. To reduce puffiness and swelling, skip the cucumbers over your eyes and use slices of raw potatoes instead. Potatoes contains a protein that also brightens skin.

Removing Eye Makeup. It is important to be gentle when removing eye makeup. The skin surrounding your eyes is very delicate and rubbing off eye makeup can worsen crow’s feet over time. Instead of rubbing your eyes to remove makeup, press down with a cotton pad containing eye makeup remover.

Which tips are you addng to your eye care regimen? Tell us with a note below!

Estee Lauder Taps Kendall Jenner To Star in Modern Muse La Rouge Fragrance Campaign

Kendall Jenner will soon add yet another Estee Lauder campaign to her resume. The 19-year-old model will star in upcoming ads for the beauty brand’s new fragrance, Modern Muse La Rouge.

Fashionista writes that Estee Lauder CEO Fabrizio Freda shared the news last Tuesday in a call revealing that sales across all of Estee Lauder’s brands rose just 1% during the first three months of 2015. The company is attempting to encourage sales among millennials by hiring young stars such as Kendall Jenner for Estee Lauder and Tavi Gevinson for Clinique.

The strategy appears to be working: the Wall Street Journal writes that Freda said that Kendall’s posts on social media were responsible for bringing younger customers to Estee Lauder.

Freda said that Estee Lauder chooses younger models “because makeup is about transforming yourself and is playful, which fits very well with social media.”

The partnership has also benefited Kendall: Estee Lauder is her first major beauty contract.

“To be honest I grew up with Estee Lauder, I remember seeing my mom using it when I was a kid. To grow up with it and to be working with them now it’s so incredible,” Kendall said when the news was announced.

How To Pick The Best Perfume Scents For Warm Summer Months

Get the Most Popular Beauty World News Stories in a Weekly Newsletter

Fragrance

(Photo : Getty)

There’s nothing that leaves a lasting impression like a powerful scent. And this can be either a good thing…or a bad thing.

We all want to be remembered for the right reasons and a captivating fragrance can do just that. Who doesn’t appreciate the value of smelling irresistible?

Everyone has the notes they prefer, but as much as we may have our favorites, it’s a great idea to switch up your fragrances at the start of a new season.

Summer is almost officially here, so many of us will be shopping around for that new summery scent to make our seasonal signature!

Fragrance

(Photo : Getty)

Now there are many fragrance aficionados who try to tell us what to choose, but really anyone can pick out the perfect perfume. All you need is a few simple tips to get it right.

When deciding on what fragrance to pick, BeautyPress has some great advice. So before you head out for a spritzing session, consider these pieces of perfumed advice:

Fragrance as Fabric. Think of fragrance as the fabric you would wear. Why? In the summer, we wear airy, light fabrics to allow the breeze to flow easily in the heat. Just like your clothes, a fragrance to match will have light notes, smell clean and fresh — not heavy and overwhelming.

Steer Clear of Heavier Scents. In the winter we bundle up with scarves and jackets, we sip apple cider and enjoy gingerbread cookies during the holidays. The colder months call for a heavier fragrance, one with musky, wooden and amber undertones. A fragrance that warms you up. You don’ need that during the summer.

Know The Anatomy of A Fragrance. Creating a perfume can be easily compared to composing music. Perfumes contain notes that linger to last and move you to feel something much like music.

Top Notes: Commonly referred to as the head fragrance of a perfume. These are the scents you experience first when trying a scent. They tend to be the lighter scent like of citrus or fruit.

Middle Notes: Commonly referred to as the heart of a perfume. The rich, heavy scents of a perfume are situated here. These are the scents that are most prominent.

Bottom Notes: These are the scents that will linger the most on the skin. The bottom notes are meant to be noticed some time after applying the fragrance. These will ensure everyone smells your summery scent.
